MSMF | Philanthropy | Outreach | Research | Battle against cancer
The Mazumdar Shaw Medical Foundation (MSMF), a nonprofit Section 25 company established in 2013 by Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, is dedicated for translational research, medical outreach and philanthropic support. Our goal is to make advanced healthcare accessible and cutting-edge medical science applications affordable. Until recently, healthcare has been predominantly driven by medical science, leading to remarkable advancements. However, there is a growing acknowledgment that the traditional physician-clinic-hospital-centric model must evolve into a more inclusive framework—one that integrates individuals, communities, physicians, and hospitals, enabled by technology. This transformation calls for a culture of collaborative innovation between engineering and medical sciences. Expertise in disease biology, including genomics, molecular research, big data analytics, and clinical research, must now be seamlessly combined with advanced technologies and socioeconomic insights to deliver the next generation of healthcare solutions
With this in mind MSMF has created an ecosystem for guided innovation at multiple levels. Mazumdar Shaw Centre for Translational Research (MSCTR), Mazumdar Shaw Technology Business Incubator (MSMF-TBI), Advanced Diagnostic Research Centre (ADRC) and the Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Outreach program (MSCOP) in collaboration with Narayana Health constitute an eclectic, scientific network that provides an optimal setting for novel ideation, entrepreneurship and fast track bench-side discoveries to bedside applications and smart solutions. MSMF fosters a multidisciplinary environment where scientists, clinicians, and technologists collaborate to address critical healthcare challenges. The foundation emphasizes translational research in key domains such as oncology, genomics, molecular diagnostics, and precision medicine
The emergence of personalized medicine and molecular targeted therapy has initiated major changes in the way medical treatments are administered, regulated and developed by industry and academia. Arising from these changes has been the recognition for the need of structures which are able to develop and deliver companion diagnostics and identify novel drug targets. These structures need to have academic and hospital involvement because of the clinical samples, data and expertise involved. Moreover, these structures will be ideally linked to state-of-the-art instrumentation to enable discovery and diagnostic delivery, and the experience to manage the resources and direct the developments.
Translational Research is the systematic movement of research findings into the development of innovative interventions, practices, and policies that may ultimately improve health and well-being, and also the use of knowledge derived from interventions, practices, and policies to inform research. We envision a bi-directional pathway between scientific research and community practice, bridging these two realms in more effective ways. Insights into the molecular and cellular basis of disease have been generated at an unprecedented pace in recent years, and the remaining challenge is to translate these basic research insights into clinical advances.
